Positive displacement pipettes allow viscous materials such as hydrogels to be pipetted with ease, unlike other types of pipette that often cause bubbles to be introduced into the system. This is because positive displacement pipettes operate via piston-driven displacement. This allows direct contact with the sample unlike air displacement pipettes that use an air cushion in the pipette tip to dispense materials.

Accelerate your work with ease and accuracy; Pipetting Viscous Gels for 3D Cell Culture

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems are gaining increasing interest in several biomedical fields including drug discovery and tissue engineering due to their evident advantages in providing more physiologically relevant information and more predictive data for in vivo tests. Our peptide hydrogels, PeptiGels®, are rapidly becoming the go to 3D scaffold for cell culture as they allow users to gain reproducible and reliable data with simple and fast experimental set-up. As PeptiGels® come in a range of viscosities (and functionality) to mimic any human tissue we need to optimise their pipetting to ensure efficient experimental set-up and maximise culture time, reliability and reproducibility.

Traditionally, standard air displacement pipettes have been used for 2D cell culture and they offer accurate pipetting of pure liquid samples. However, these often lead to the introduction of air bubbles and increase error when pipetting viscous liquids due to the internal mechanism of aspiration and exposure to air. To overcome this, positive displacement pipettes contain a piston mechanism integrated within the tip which gives direct contact with the sample (i.e. there is no air cushion present in standard pipettes). Consequently, the physical properties of the sample have less influence on the aspirated material which leads to more accurate pipetting and minimises the introduction of air bubbles enabling you to accelerate your work with ease and accuracy.

MBG wins an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership Grant

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded an Innovate UK grant to launch a partnership with Dr Armando del Rio Hernandez, from the Department of Bioengineering Imperial College London, to use our PeptiGel® platform to develop organ-like matrices for studies and tools to observe hard-to-see cellular processes.

Dr Armando del Rio Hernandez has created a unique platform of biophysical tools to study how mechanical cues are transduced into chemical signals in health and in cancer. Our CEO, Aline Miller, said “We are thrilled to partner with Armando and his group and apply our PeptiGels® for use as a platform for cell biology studies”. Excitingly, we will be capitilising on our ability to tailor our peptide hydrogel properties to mimic the mechanical and chemical environment of both healthy and cancer tissue. We will explore independently the influence of each on cell activation, survival and growth and investigate details mechanotransduction on signalling pathways.

Dr del Rio Hernandez said: “This partnership will allow us to join our technologies to observe cellular events that are not currently ‘visible’. Learning about these cellular processes should provide fundamental knowledge for the development of new therapies. Moreover, the proposed outcomes of this partnership will create a unique platform for 3D cell biology studies.”
